- China orders an increase in coal production
- Seeks to end power cuts due in the country
- Rising coal prices to blame for the power cuts
The Chinese government reportedly orders an increase in coal mining to boost electricity generation as power cuts persist. China has recently been hit with an electricity crisis resulting in blackouts and forcing some regions to implement power cuts. Millions of homes and businesses have already been affected by the power cuts, and it is expected that electricity demand will increase as the winter season approaches.
According to Reuters News Agency, amidst soaring demand for electricity, Northern China’s Inner Mongolia region, the second-largest coal producer in China, has ordered about 70 mines to increase capacity by nearly 100 million tonnes. In addition, record-high global coal prices have forced several electric utilities to ration power, with manufacturing industries being the worst hit.
