South African chemical company Sasol is set to conduct a feasibility study to produce green hydrogen in the Namakwa Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The study is set to be conducted at Boegoebaai port in the Richtersveld municipality. Sasol has partnered with the Northern Cape Development Agency (NCEDA) to conduct the study to develop green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities. The feasibility study will be done over the next two years and will influence Sasol’s green hydrogen production and export project.
In the South African National Development Plan, Sasol’s green hydrogen programme has been designated a Strategic Integrated Project (SIP). Sasol plans to make Boegoebaai “a global centre for green hydrogen”. Priscillah Mabelane, executive vice president for energy at Sasol, states: “There is potential to create an ecosystem anchored on location to enable long-term sustainable benefits for the communities and the country.”
Sasol has also signed other agreements and partnerships on green hydrogen development in the Rainbow nation. For example, Sasol partnered with Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) to develop green hydrogen for truck transportation in South Africa.
