- NEDCo losses 38% of revenue to illegal connections
Ghanaian electricity distribution utility, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), has decried the losses incurred due to illegal connections on its network in Kabonwule, in the Northern Region, Ghana. The Corporate Communications Manager NEDCo, Maxwell Kotoka, has stated that the utility losses at least 38% of revenue due to the illegal connections by its customers.
In an interview, Kotoka stated that illegal connections had become the norm in Kabonwule in the Northern region. “We suffer a loss of about 38% as we can’t account for the illegal power supply siphoned by residents of Kabonwule,” Kotoka said.
“Our loss is dependent on the season. For instance, during the rainy season, we don’t make much loss as compared to the dry season because they are farmers,” he added.
NEDCo is working hard to clamp down on illegal connections while developing sustainable measures to combat the problem. “We will look for a sustainable measure because it is an endemic situation that needs an endemic solution. It is very difficult when the people in the community do not want to cooperate, but we will find a way,” Kotoka said.
