- Egypt, Greece sign historic agreement
- To connect Europe and Africa through underwater cables
- This is a first of its kind agreement between both continents
Egypt and Greece have signed a historic agreement, setting the stage for connecting electricity grids in Europe and Africa. The project would involve the laying of undersea cables between both countries. The project will facilitate electricity trade between both countries and develop the renewable energy sector in Egypt.
In attendance at the signing ceremony were the Energy Ministers of Egypt, Mohammed Shaker, and his Greecian counterpart Kostas Skrekas.
“The electrical interconnection between Egypt and Greece will achieve … a well-connected network across the Eastern Mediterranean”, Egypt’s Shaker said.
“We are at the beginning of an important project, and I am sure we will all make our best to see it succeeding as soon as possible,” Skrekas said
“Such an interconnection it’s a win-win for both Greece, Egypt and the European Union”, he added.
The Egypt-Greece interconnection project will help build an Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor and improve the security of energy supply in the region.
