- Total Eren and Angolan authorities have set up an SPV to build a solar PV plant in the country’s south.
- The plant will have a capacity of 35MWp
- The majority of Angola’s installed capacity is located in the north of the country.
French company Total Eren, the Angolan national oil company Sonangol and Angola Environment Technology (Greentech) has signed a shareholder agreement to establish a clean energy company, Quilemba Solar. The special purpose company will develop a 35MWp solar PV plant in Quilemba, in southwest Angola. Quilemba Solar will be 51 per cent owned by Total Eren, 30 per cent by Sonangol and 19 per cent by Greentech.
According to Total Eren, “the partnership will be crucial for the finalization of the development of Quilemba Solar as well as for the implementation of the project. Once commissioned, the solar park will provide significant fuel savings compared to existing thermal power plants. It will increase the renewable energy production capacity in southern Angola, in line with the country’s strong ambition for the renewable energy sector.”
Angola currently has an installed capacity of 6,113 MW; however, the majority of this capacity is concentrated in the north of the country, leaving the country’s southern parts with a supply deficit.
The Angolan government is committed to reducing the energy gap between the north and the south. Accordingly, the government is implementing a project to construct an AfDB financed $530 million electric line to connect both regions.
