Clean energy developer Solgas Energy is set to commission its Cross Mabale solar power plant in the northern Matabeleland province in Zimbabwe. The grid-connected power plant has a capacity of 5 MWp and is the first phase in the company’s plans of deploying 50MWp. The energy from the plant is currently sold to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission & Distribution Company (ZETDC) under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
The plant was constructed by South African companies Soventix SA, Excess Africa and Proconics. This first phase required an investment of $7.5 million and was supported financially by several partners, including Old Mutual, ANF Capital, Ainos Ngadya, Mushoriwa-Pasi Corporate Attorneys and Stanbic Bank. The second phase will see the expansion of the plant to 15MW, while the third and final stage will see an expansion to 45MWp. Solgas is aiming to become a key player in Zimbabwe’s energy transition. The company is also deploying residential solar systems in the cities of Chiredzi, Bulawayo and Harare.
