Burkina Faso Unveils Roadmap for Energy Storage Deployment

  • Burkina Faso unveils a roadmap for energy storage development.
  • The government plans PPP for systems deployment.

The Burkina Faso government, through the national utility Société Nationale d’électricité du Burkina Faso (Sonabel), plans to develop battery storage capacity as part of its energy transition options. Burkina Faso plans to make up for intermittent clean energy with energy storage systems to meet demand after sunset. The government believes that the private sector, which has already funded several solar power projects, would be integral to the plans.

Burkina Faso’s clean energy roadmap will see the country deploy between 60-70 MW (160-220 MWh) of independent battery electricity storage solutions (i-BESS. The roadmap is supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC)under its Conflict-Affected States in Africa (CASA) initiative. The initiative launched in 2009 supports countries affected by conflict by rebuilding private sectors to create economic growth.

The initiative is supported by Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. In addition, the governments of Denmark and Japan will also support the plan to develop energy storage capacity in Burkina Faso.
