- Eskom reassures consumers of network stability
- Dispels allegations its network is on the brink of collapse
- Five generating units have returned to service
South Africa’s electric utility, Eskom, has reassured consumers of the stability of its network. In a statement, Eskom debunked allegations that its network system was on the brink of collapse. The state-owned utility has for the one week implemented Stage 2 and Stage 4 load shedding following the failure of several units of its generating plants, which led to to the loss of at least 15,000MW.
“Load shedding is implemented as a last resort to maintain the stability of the power system regardless of the stage of load shedding as the power system remains to be effectively controlled.” the statement read.
“Eskom would like to assure the public that there is a very low probability of a system collapse, and therefore, no cause for alarm,” Eskom clarified.
Eskom also noted that the Koeberg, Medupi, Kriel, Duvha, Kusile and Tutuka power stations have returned to service.
