- Kenya’s IPPs, private sector participants launch association
- ESAK aims at improving private sector participation in the sector
Kenya’s private sector market participants and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have launched the Electricity Sector Association of Kenya (ESAK) to harness private sector investments to develop the country’s electricity sector. The ESAK comprises IPPs and other market participants involved in developing captive power plants and other private sector participants in the transmission and distribution value chain.
The pioneer Chairperson, George Aluru, stated that the organization would work towards improving private sector participation in the development of a sustainable electricity sector.
”The association is seized with a myriad of challenges, chief of them being how to support economic growth by attracting investment in electricity while ensuring sustainability where the customer, utilities, and generators all benefit equally,” Aluru said.
“ESAK supports the activities geared towards improving the wellbeing of Kenya Power, and we welcome any collaboration with the Government to this end. We acknowledge that there is insufficient understanding around IPP involvement and how the sector works. ESAK will continue to constructively engage stakeholders offering partnership, data-driven and accurate information on the state of the sector,” he added.
