S Africa Announces 25 Preferred Bidders for REIPPP 5th Round

South Africa’s mineral resources and energy minister, Gwede Mantashe, has announced 25 preferred bidders for a tender to deploy 2.6GW of clean energy. The preferred bidders for the tender, which is the fifth round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), include 12 wind and 13 solar developers.

The solar projects have an individual capacity of 75MW, culminating in a total capacity of 975MW. Ten of the selected wind projects have individual capacities of 140MW, while the remaining two have 124MW and 84MW for a total of 1.6 GW. Eight of the projects are located in the Free State province; seven will be built in each of Northern Cape and Western Cape, two in Eastern Cape and one in KwaZulu-Natal.

The tariff for the projects ranges from ZAR 344.25 (USD 22.6/EUR 19.37) per MWh to ZAR 617.70/MWh, with the lowest price being 124-MW Dwarsrug wind project in the Northern Cape, while the highest is for the 84MW Wolf wind farm in the Eastern Cape. Mainstream Renewable Power stated that 12 of its proposed projects were selected as preferred bidders representing about 1.27GW or of the total allocation.
