- Scotland has begun consultations for its plans to deploy up to 12GW of onshore wind.
- The consultations will last until January 2022.
- Scotland sees Onshore wind as a cost-effective large-electricity generation source.
Last week, the Scottish government began consultation on its ambition to deploy 8GW to 12GW of additional onshore wind capacity by 2030. The country currently has an installed onshore wind capacity of 8.4GW. The government also states that about 202 projects with a total capacity of approximately 9.7GW are presently in several stages of development. The government’s consultation, which will last till January 21, 2022, will elicit views on how to address deployment barriers and secure maximum economic benefit.
Net Zero and Energy Secretary Michael Matheson stated: “Onshore wind is one of the most cost-effective forms of large-scale electricity generation and is vital to Scotland’s future energy mix as we transition to a net-zero economy.” Scotland’s Climate Change Plan Update plans the deployment of 11GW-16GW of clean energy capacity by 2032
