Kenyan-based EV start-up BasiGo has secured $1 million to produce electric buses with a range of 250km. These buses will have 25 and 36 seat capacity and are suited for public transport in Nairobi. BasiGo has set its sights on transforming public transportation in east Africa and believes its electric buses will provide a cost-effective public transportation alternative to diesel-powered buses.
The company plans to sell locally assembled electric buses using parts from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD Automotive. BasiGo backers currently include investors such as Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm Climate Capital and Third Derivative, a gas pedal focused on climate technologies.
The development of the E-mobility sector in Kenya has seen recent progress. For example, Opibus raised $7.5 million to enable it to scale the manufacturing of its electric motorcycles in 2022. NopeaRide is also looking to distribute electric vehicles in the Kenyan market.
