- KenGen’s CEO has said the company is committed to transitioning to clean energy.
- One of the largest geothermal energy producers, KenGen plans to deploy mainly clean projects.
The Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), Rebecca Miano, says the company is speeding up its deployment of clean energy solutions. While speaking at the Accelerating Clean Technology Innovation and Deployment at the COP26 World Leaders Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, Miano said KenGen is committed to taking climate action and that the utility is supporting the Kenyan government’s goal of 100 per cent clean energy utilisation by 2030. “Our future project pipeline, which is mostly green, includes geothermal, wind, solar and some hydro. The projects will be implemented in phases, with the first expected to be commissioned by the end of this year,” said Miano.
Maino added that the company is committed to meeting the business ambitions of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), which aims to make businesses adopt more sustainability goals. In addition, Miano stated that KenGen is enhancing its partnership with other stakeholders to make clean energy the most affordable, attractive and accessible option for consumers.
On cooperation and knowledge sharing, Miano added: “I am happy to confirm that we are already sharing our expertise and skills in accelerating clean energy innovation deployment, more so in geothermal development. “Indeed, in Africa, we have a golden chance to go green early enough when the opportunity for growth is still rife. Through partnerships, which is SDG 17, we make the world habitat a better place for present and future generations.”
