  • OSIR says Eskom has had the worst load shedding experience under De Ruyter

South Africa’s Finance minister Enoch Godongwana, has expressed concerns about the performance of the state-owned utility, Eskom. Eskom has is currently experiencing financial and operational challenges that have led to several power interruptions, including the recent Stage 4 load shedding.

Godongwana lamented the peformance of Eskom’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Andre De Ruyter.  “We don’t see the results of that planned maintenance; he’s cut us out of electricity doing planned maintenance. The indication is that there are more blackouts under him than ever,” Godongwana said.

In a report by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Eskom has had the worst load shedding experiences the country has seen under the leadership of De Ruyter, with 2020 and 2021 being the worst years in its history.

Several groups, last week, called for the resignation or sack of Eskom Chief De Ruyter. In his response, De Ruyter stated that he wouldn’t be handing in his resignation, and his removal won’t impact the current challenges faced by the utility.
