The Bui Power Authority (BPA) plans to construct eight solar power plants in northern Ghana. The company has identified the following sites, Yendi in the Northern Region, Buipe and Sawla in the Savannah, Zebilla and Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. The plants will have a cumulative capacity of 259MWp, with construction set to begin in Q1 2022. The BPA plans to generate about 700MWp of solar energy by 2024.
The BPA has also partnered with the Sunyani Renewable Energy University to deploy several renewable energy projects, including a 404MW hydropower plant, a 250MW onshore solar power plant. In addition, the BPA plans to increase the floating solar capacity of the region by exploiting the Bui Dam reservoir. The eight solar sites were selected because of their proximity to Ghana Grid Company (GridCo) substations in the north of the country.
