- Egypt, Jordan reach a deal to increase energy trade capacity
- Up to 2,000MW will be traded by both countries
The governments of Egypt and Jordan have agreed to increase the current energy trading capacity in a bid to strengthen the electrical interconnection between both countries. In the new deal, the current capacity of 500MW will be increased by more than twice the capacity up to 2,000MW.
The Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, speaking on the new deal, said, ”Our relationship with Egypt is distinguished, as the electrical connection between Jordan and Egypt began in 1999, and there is an exchange of electrical energy with capacities of up to 500 megawatts, and the new agreement may raise this capacity to 1,000 or 2,000 megawatts in the future,”
The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohammed Shaker, also speaking on the development, stated that Egypt was capable of delivering on the deal reached. Shaker also added that Egypt plans to increase its available capacity by up to 42% through investments in renewable energy by 2035.
Al-Kharabsheh also stated that the new deal reached by both countries would benefit the region through interconnection agreements which will extend to other African countries and Europe.
