- KenGen records the highest electricity consumption
- Consumption rose by 22.58% as the country recovers from the pandemic
Data from Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has shown that the country recorded the highest consumption peak ever as it continues to recover from the pandemic period. Consumption by residential and commercial customers reached 2,036MW representing a 22.58% increase, 19 months since the pandemic.
In a statement, the state-owned utility, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) called the development a ”…significant resurgence in demand since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020,”
Commercial customers, including the manufacturing sector, large commercial outlets such as malls and office buildings account for at least 55% of the total increase in consumption. On the other hand, domestic consumers and small businesses made up 29% and 15% of consumption.
