- KPLC to provide high-speed internet services to consumers
- To take advantage of its existing electricity network to become an ISP
Kenya’s state-owned utility, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), has announced plans to pivot in providing high-speed internet services for its consumers in the medium to long term.
In its latest annual report, Kenya Power, which previously leased fibre-optic cables attached to its transmission lines to Internet Service Providers (ISP), stated that the move to become an ISP is in response to an increase in demand from consumers for internet services.
“In the medium to long-term, the company is exploring the fibre business to increase the penetration of internet connectivity, particularly in the rural areas,” the report said.
“The company’s extensive fibre network presently offers dark fibre services to the country’s major ISPs to facilitate the provision of Internet services to the end buyer in the retail and enterprise segments across the country and neighbouring countries,” KPLC said
With its recent network expansion, Kenya Power will have an advantage over its competitors to connect millions of potential customers in rural areas using existing cables.
