Zimplats to Acquire $201 Million for 185MW of Solar Power in Zimbabwe

  • Impala Platinum is set to acquire two 185MW solar PV plants in Zimbabwe.

Zimplats, a subsidiary of the South African mining company Impala Platinum, will acquire two 185MWp solar photovoltaic plants for its mining operations in Zimbabwe. The company, one of the country’s biggest platinum miners plans to invest about $201 million to build its future facilities.

The funding is part of a 10-year, $1.8 billion investment budget recently approved by the board of directors. The funding objective is to expand the mining company’s operations by upgrading its current sites to maintain its production levels.

The project involves the construction of two solar photovoltaic plants. With a capacity of 105 MWp, the larger one will be installed in Ngezi to support mining operations and power concentrators. The second solar plant will have a capacity of 80 MWp and be located in Selous town, where it will power a smelter and concentrator.
