- Inquiries on self-generation increase say NERSA
- Eskom increased self-generation threshold to 100MW last year
South African businesses are increasingly looking to explore the option of self-generation, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has stated. Following last years increase in the threshold for self-generation up to 100MW, the South African regulator has seen an increase in the number of inquiries on self-generation.
According to NERSA’s spokesperson, Charles Hlebela, while there are few applications for self-generation, ”There is a lot of interest expressed with the increase of the registration threshold to 100MW — we have received more than ten inquiries from the industry,”
Experts expressed optimism on the impact of reducing tight restrictions on the self-generation threshold and the dependency on state-owned electric utility Eskom’s grid. Eskom, in recent times, suffered serious grid constraints impacting service delivery and necessitating frequent load sheddings across the country.
