- 20,000 sign petition against Eskom’s tariff proposal
- Tshwane and Cape Town municipalities reject planned increase
At least 20,000 electricity consumers have signed a petition by the Democratic Alliance (DA) have shared their outrage and frustration at the state-owned electric utility, Eskom’s proposed tariff hike of 20.5%. The DA launched a public petition against the planned tariff increment on Thursday.
In its petition, the DA said, “Eskom’s inability to provide a regular supply of electricity to consumers makes the entity’s demand for a massive tariff increase not only outrageous but also out of touch with the rising cost of living for the average South African consumer,”
The DA further stated that it “..cannot allow poor South Africans to once again bear the brunt of the ANC government’s failings and mismanagement”.
The tariff proposal has, so far, been rejected by the Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, LimpopoTshwane and Cape Town municipalities. The country awaits the final decision of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) on the proposal.
