- ZERA grants license to Zimplats for Solar Power Installation
- Zimplats is investing $201 million in solar energy generation
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has granted Zimplats, the Zimbabwean unit of Impala Platinum, the license to deploy its solar power projects. The mining company will generate its power by developing two solar power plants of 105MW in Ngezi mine and 80MW in Selous mine, both located in Mashonaland West province.
In July 2021, Zimplats had submitted the applications for the approval of the total 185MW solar energy project to ZERA. In December, the CEO of Zimplats, Alex Mhembere, stated that the company is investing $201 million in the solar PV plants “to augment power supplies and enhance ESG performance metrics”. According to him, the solar power plants are expected to be commissioned in the 2023 financial year.
