- China takes the lead as the biggest offshore wind energy generator as it adds 16.9GW capacity.
- The state’s overall capacity has peaked at 26.4GW.
In a report from China’s state-owned communication’s TV, the country has reached about 26.4GW of cumulative offshore wind power generating capacity. This follows the connection of 16.9GW of sea turbines in 2021.
According to the National Energy Administration, China now ranks first in terms of grid-connected offshore wind farms, the broadcaster noted. In addition, BloombergNEF data cited by Bloomberg News shows that the 16.9GW installed in China last year represents almost half the world’s total installed offshore capacity before 2021.
Towards the end of 2021, China Three Gorges announced the full commissioning of three offshore wind projects totalling 3.1GW, including the nation’s first gigawatt-scale offshore wind park, the 1.7GW Shapa plant near Yangjiang in Guangdong province.
China has added about 53 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 47.6 GW of on- and offshore wind capacity last year. The former figure includes some 29.2 GW of distributed solar PV.
