- Tanzania hopes to improve electricity supply through power facility upgrade
The Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) is upgrading its power station to increase electricity generation. The power stations currently under upgrade include Kinyerezi I, which will generate 185MW, and Ubungo III, 112MW.
TANESCO Director-General Maharage Chande briefed journalists that the Ubungo III plants have reached 60MW and will be connected to the national grid. He added that the extension of Kinyerezi I is in progress, and it will generate 70MW, which will also be added to the national grid in April this year.
According to Chande, maintenance at Kinyerezi I and Ubungo III has increased gas consumption, necessitating the improvement of the infrastructure to meet that demand. “The improvements in the Tanzania Petroleum Development Company (TPDC) and Pan African Energy Tanzania (PAET) gas systems may result in gas shortages in natural gas power generation facilities, and some of these systems will have to be shut down to allow this essential exercise,” he said.
Chande further noted that an upgrade would occur at the existing Songosongo gas wells from the 1st to the 10th of February, 2022. Once completed, it will boost the production of additional gas required for electricity generation.
