The Imo State government announced yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari had given anticipatory approval for constructing a dam in the Nworie River to generate electricity for the city of Owerri.
Governor Hope Uzodimma made this announcement in a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. According to a statement issued by Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, the President approved the project after Uzodimma informed him of the river’s capacity to boost electricity, which would benefit the state’s economy, noting that conceptual designs are required.
The governor also discussed the Oguta Seaport’s construction status as a viable economic hub. “I also asked the President to consider locating a power generating facility in Nworie River, where we could control the flood with balloon technology, and the tide has increased. “And now that the river has enough water, we can use it to generate electricity to serve the Owerri metropolis,” he said.
