Iberdrola has pledged to invest billions of dollars in three offshore wind projects totalling 2800MW in Massachusetts. The Spanish company will invest US$10 billion (€8.8 billion) in the development of the sites, according to Iberdrola chairman Ignacio Galán during a meeting today with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.
Galan also discussed the company’s growth strategy in the United States for 2020-2025, which will allow it to double its renewable generation capacity and accelerate the country’s decarbonization. “Our projects in Massachusetts will be critical to achieving the US goal of 30,000MW of wind energy by 2030, and they will generate industrial development and employment,” Galan said.
Iberdrola is developing 2800MW of offshore wind in three separate projects in Massachusetts and a 1200MW interconnection line to transport hydroelectric power from Canada.
According to the company, Iberdrola’s projects will meet 35% of the state’s electricity demand with clean and competitive energy, creating around 4,000 jobs during construction over the next few years.
