- MCC recently allocated about $12 million to encourage compact design.
- The new agreement will replace a $44.4 million threshold program between MCC and Sierra Leone.
The Sierra Leone government has asked MCC to create a prospective compact in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Compact Development Unit to address the lack of affordable and dependable energy among homes, businesses, and social organisations.
The lack of power exacerbates Sierra Leone’s food insecurity by limiting the availability of energy-based processing and storage technologies, resulting in high food loss and waste rates. MCC’s visit comes on the heels of MCC’s recent grant of over $12 million to enhance the compact design.
The Sierra Leone government and MCC undertook a constraints study to determine the binding restrictions to Sierra Leone’s economic growth. The absence of dependable and inexpensive power is recognised as a major obstacle. The new agreement will replace a $44.4 million threshold program between MCC and Sierra Leone’s government, which ended in March 2021. The threshold creates a framework of policy reform, sector cooperation, and operational management to improve water and electricity services in and around Freetown.
