Gabon to Install First Private Sector-led Hydropower Plant

  • MIGA issue guarantees for Asonha Energie to build and operate a hydropower plant in Gabon.
  • IPPs will run on a 20-year guarantee.

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) has issued guarantees to Meridiam for equity investments into Asonha Energie SA, which will build and operate the 35MW Kinguélé Aval Hydropower Plant in Gabon.

The government of Gabon (GoG) aims to transition into sustainable energy sources and create a single national integrated grid using hydropower. GoG intends to rely on independent power producers (IPP) to exploit its largely untapped hydro potential.

The government is providing a 20-year guarantee totaling €25.3 million (about $28.7m) to protect from breach of contract, expropriation, transfer restriction, currency convertibility, and civil disturbance for the IPPs.
