RWE AG, a German energy company, plans to develop a terminal in Brunsbuettel, near Hamburg, to handle the import of around 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year starting in 2026, with the capacity eventually increasing to 2 million tonnes.
RWE announced that the green ammonia imported through the terminal will be distributed to industrial clients. A large-scale cracker will be built at the site in the next step, producing green hydrogen that will be sent to customers via a pipeline.
The project establishes the groundwork for the development of green import infrastructure, which will aid in the import of green fuel into Germany. Brunsbuettel’s location near the mouth of the Elbe river gives ideal conditions for such an effort since it has access to both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, as well as inland canals throughout Europe.
To facilitate speedy infrastructure construction, the Essen-based group asks for pragmatic action, quick planning and approval processes, and short construction schedules.
