  • NERC Chairman and the Managing Director, NDPHC, have acknowledged the development of 634.5MW and 562MW plants.
  • Sule Abdulaziz, TCN’s Managing Director, said the government is doing all it can to improve the country’s power supply.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) have announced that one of the 14 idle power plants – the 450MW Calabar plant will begin operation today. NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba, and the Managing Director, NDPHC, Chief Ugbo, acknowledged the development at a stakeholder’s interactive session late last night.

According to Garba, the power facility was shut down because of gas shortages. He further stated that the country lost 800MW from the Calabar and Alaoji power facilities due to the lack of gas. “By the end of today, we expect the gas supply to the Calabar power plant will have been restored.”

Mr Sule Abdulaziz, TCN’s Managing Director, said regretfully that the grid had been neglected for so long, resulting in recurrent grid collapses. He stated that the government is doing all it can to improve the country’s power supply. TCN, he added, was doing everything it could to limit the frequency of system failures.
