- Schwarz Gruppe considers installing 3,700 Solar PV by 2025.
- More than 1,600 other solar systems will be installed throughout Germany.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Germany’s Schwarz Gruppe, which owns Lidl and Kaufland, plans to install 3,700 solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on and around its buildings by 2025 bringing the total number of PV plants to 5,000.
Last week, the family-owned company announced that more than 1,600 additional solar systems would be installed throughout Germany. After the increase, Schwarz Gruppe’s solar generation capacity will be around 700,000 kWp. The company stated that it has been procuring all of its electricity from renewable sources since the beginning of 2022, except for procurement contracts over which it has no authority.
Schwarz Gruppe will generate 130 million kWh of green electricity in-house in 2022, up 63 percent from the previous year. This is the equivalent of over 30,000 households’ annual consumption. The transition to 100 percent renewable energy and the extension of the group’s in-house solar portfolio is part of the company’s climate strategy, which calls for a 55 percent reduction in operating carbon emissions by the end of this decade compared to 2019. Schwarz Gruppe employs 500,000 people and manages 12,900 stores in 33 countries.
