Grenergy Renovables, a Spanish renewables producer, opened its 12.5MWp Tucanes solar PV project in Colombia alongside Colombian government officials. The Spanish corporation put USD 11 million (EUR 9.9 million) into the project with the help of Colombian commercial bank Bancolombia SA.
The plant, which Grenergy developed in the department of Bolivar, used about 23,700 solar panels in its construction. The Tucanes solar farm should generate 140GWh per year, enough to power more than 40,000 houses for a year. According to Grenergy, its output is sold to Colombian power utility Celsia under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).
Tucanes is part of a network of 72MW distribution projects developed by Grenergy in Colombia. The Spanish firm claims to have a 1,000MW portfolio of projects in the South American country, totaling USD 700 million in investment.
