  • The PPA will enable the importation of 50MW of electricity through the Soma and Brikama substations.

The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) in The Gambia has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Société Nationale d’électricité du Sénégal (SENELEC). The PPA will facilitate the importation of 50MW of electricity through the Soma and Brikama OMVG substations for five years. NAWEC will initially use 30MW this year on a take-and-pay basis.

The Managing Director of NAWEC, Nani Juwara, and the Director-General of Senelec, Papa Mademba Biteye, signed the agreement in Dakar, Senegal.

With the signing of the agreement and the completion of the 225kV transmission lines and substations of the OMVG from Kaolack-Soma-Brikama, NAWEC has secured sufficient power capacity for the first time in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) to meet current demand. The new OMVG transmission line has been connected to the local network, and the final stages of commissioning and testing are being completed.
