- The United Kingdom has developed a new energy strategy to include the development of nuclear reactors.
- The nation aims to reduce dependence on oil and gas from Russia and other foreign suppliers.
The United Kingdom has announced plans to construct eight new nuclear reactors and utilise more renewable energy. This comes as the country aims to reduce dependence on oil and gas from Russia and other foreign suppliers, following the invasion of Ukraine. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday that the plans as part of a new energy security strategy would also aim at increasing the development of solar power and hydrogen projects.
The UK government stressed that it aims to almost triple nuclear power generation capacity by 2050. “We are setting out bold plans to scale up and accelerate affordable, clean and secure energy made in Britain, for Britain, from new nuclear to offshore wind, in the decade ahead. This will reduce our dependence on power sources exposed to volatile international prices we cannot control,” Johnson said.
The strategy is in response to the surge in oil and natural gas prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and concerns Russia could cut energy supplies.
Household gas and electricity prices in the UK jumped 54 per cent this month as high energy prices fuel a cost-of-living crisis in the UK.
