Uniper plans to test the large-scale storage of hydrogen in a real environment and convert its former gas storage facility located in Krummhoern, Northern Germany into a hydrogen storage facility.
Uniper will invest EUR 10 million into the hydrogen storage facility with expectations of having the facility store up to 250,000 cu m (66.04m gal) of hydrogen. The gas reservoir to be converted, which has been out of commercial operation since 2017, will now have Uniper sink a new cavern using an existing well.
Commenting on the project, Uniper Energy Storage’s managing director Doug Waters said: “Uniper has decided to move forward with this project independent of other funded projects to test the technology and processes as quickly as possible. Our goal is to develop a storage solution for green hydrogen on a commercial scale and later offer it on the market.”
The plant will be housed in Wilhelmshaven, located on the North Sea coast, where Uniper is working on two projects- an ammonia import terminal and an electrolysis plant of about 1 GW for hydrogen production.
