Canadian Solar to Install 100MWh of Batteries in the UK

  • Secures four battery projects of more than 100MWh

Canadian Solar Inc has revealed its activities in the UK utility-scale energy storage market. The firm stated that it had started securing work on four battery storage projects of more than 100MWh in total.

Pulse Clean Energy is the awarding firm for the contracts. Canadian Solar will deliver the systems and provide engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services in the long-term contract agreement between the two companies.

Canadian Solar will hold operations rights and conduct maintenance for the facilities for ten years. The batteries will aid Pulse Clean Energy in optimising its ancillary grid services, improving energy balancing capabilities, and capturing multiple revenue streams.

“These projects mark the start of our battery conversion program in the UK. We previously acquired nine diesel generation sites with a vision to decommission and repurpose these locations as grid-scale storage and energy optimisation assets,” said Trevor Wills, COO of Pulse Clean Energy.

At the end of January, Canadian Solar had an energy storage portfolio of 300MWh for projects under a long-term service agreement. It also had 2,043MWh of projects under construction and a remaining pipeline that exceeded 4GWh.
