The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) is allocating $50 million to the Universal Energy Facility (UEF). The Alliance is a global partnership that aims to mobilise $100 billion over ten years to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in developing countries, Africa, Latin America and Asia.
The UEF will leverage the $50 million in funding to support the energy transition and access to renewable energy in developing countries, particularly in Africa.
“We are delighted to have this major support from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet for our work to provide clean, affordable and sufficient energy for all,” said Damilola Ogunbiyi, SEforALL’s Executive Director and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Energy for All.
The UEF is already active in sub-Saharan Africa, notably Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Benin. The facility’s first round of funding aims to support access to renewable energy for 2.3 million people by 2023.
It will focus on solar mini-grids, which have a proven impact on rural electrification in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to the Alliance, the Universal Energy Facility is supported by Power Africa, Good Energies, UK Aid, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Carbon Trust, the Association of Mini-Grid Developers in Africa (AMDA) and the Shell Foundation.
