The Independent Power Producer (IPP) office is set to put forward a request for a proposal to procure 513 MW of battery storage. This is in line with South Africa’s renewable energy development plan.
In the light of the expected rise in renewable energy production in the country, battery storage will become key to managing the electricity grid. The large-scale battery storage capacity will be located at Eskom substations, with the utility buying the stored electricity from the successful bidders.
In a statement by the head of the IPP office, Tshifhiwa Magoro, “what we call balancing the grid. So, we can restore energy when it’s available and release that energy. We can store that energy during the day when we have excess in production, and that energy can then be released during the peak period after the sunset.”
Currently, more than 5,800 megawatts are being tapped into the grid from the different renewable energy technologies.
