- Over 600 hectares of land will house the Green City Kigali project.
- Rwanda pioneers climate resilient cities in Africa.
Kigali has experienced droughts at various intervals due to climate change and is at the forefront of setting the pace for sustainable urban development in Africa. The “Green City Kigali” project, first conceived in 2020 but interrupted by COVID-19, is to be sited on 600 hectares of land in the Kinyinya hill area, Gasabo, located in the capital city, Kigali.
The model city will be home to climate resilient green technologies with positive economic and social impact while reducing ecological footprints. The key features of the city will include houses built from local materials and powered by solar, storm and wastewater collection systems, urban forests, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies.
A UK-based engineering phase is said to work on the 1st phase of the project in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects. This phase covering 16 hectares of land, will lay the ground design for quality, resource-efficient housing with a low carbon footprint. This project will provide the blueprint for other African countries to replicate as part of the strategies to meet the global goal of net zero by 2050.
