Royal Caribbean Group, a US-based cruise company, has revealed its plans to open a new cruise terminal at the Port of Galveston. The terminal, measuring about 161,334 square feet, will generate 100% of its needed energy from renewables and will welcome approximately 630,000 travellers annually. The project, estimated to cost about $125 million, is designed to focus on developing sustainable infrastructure that aligns with the environmental goals.
All materials and transportation during the construction process produced less carbon. In addition, the terminals’ 30,000 square feet of on-site photovoltaic solar panels will generate sustainable energy to drive the ports’ energy demand. The port will export excess generated to the local power grid.
The Port of Galveston cruise terminal is a LEED Gold facility that anticipates receiving its certification within the first two quarters of 2023 and achieving the LEED Gold certification in Texas. According to Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, the company’s focus is to innovate to advance sustainability in communities around it.
