A photovoltaics manufacturing unit of China’s Zhongli Group, Talesun Solar, has announced the commissioning of a 325MW solar module production plant in South Africa.
The manufacturing facility is a joint project of Talesun and South African manufacturer ARTsolar, built to meet the requirements of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE) Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement (RMIPPP). The specific programme is a 2GW procurement round, under which eight preferred bids for a total of 1,845MW were announced in March 2021.
Talesun Solar stated that the plant’s operations would serve as a catalyst and model for the quality-focused development of the local PV industry and the whole of the local economy. The Chinese firm added that its partnership with ARTsolar is devoted to supplying high-performance PV modules to South Africa and the broader US and European markets.
Representatives from the local government, industry associations and banks were present at the commissioning ceremony.
