CCC calls on UK Gov’t to Promote Energy Efficiency

  • Climate Change Committee (CCC) has called for more action to increase energy efficiency in buildings across the UK.
  • Less than 60% of households can achieve energy efficiency that are compatible with net zero for less than £1,100.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) and its Chairman, Lord Deben, sent a letter to the Chancellor highlighting the need for urgent action on decarbonising buildings as reducing energy demand in UK buildings is the biggest gap in the current government energy policy. In addition,  a decade ago, 2.3 million energy efficiency measures were installed annually through government-backed schemes and fewer than 100,000 measures were installed last year. According to The CCC’s analysis, less than 60% of households can achieve levels of energy efficiency that are compatible with net zero for less than £1,100.

Deben said: “Beyond the real savings that energy efficiency improvements to the public sector estate offer government, there is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership. The government should not expect households and businesses to change their approach and invest in efficiency measures if it does not also take similar steps”.

A government spokesperson in response said, “Our existing public information campaign, Help for Households, is driving up the public’s awareness of all the support available to help them with the cost of living, including saving money on energy bills. We are also investing £6.6 billion in total in this parliament to improve energy efficiency across the country. The majority of our support targets those in low-income and vulnerable households”.
