- A consortium of companies is commissioning Africa’s first green hydrogen production facility.
- The facility is situated in the Suez Canal Economic Zone in Egypt.
Egypt now centres Africa’s production of hydrogen and its byproducts. This goal is now a reality thanks to the recent opening of the first green hydrogen production facility in Africa by the nation of North Africa. The facility was created by a group of companies led by independent power producer (IPP) Scatec as a demonstrator for a large-scale hydrogen manufacturing project.
The Norwegian company has partnered with Orascom Construction, a leading Egyptian firm, and Fertiglobe, a company that produces ammonia and is jointly controlled by OCI N.V. and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The consortium will scale up the new green hydrogen plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone by creating the Egypt Green SPV.
Setting up a 100 MW electrolysis capacity powered by 260 MW of solar and wind energy is the project’s goal as it has evolved since 2021. Each year, this electrolyzer will produce 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. This item will serve as the feedstock for the annual production of at least 90,000 tonnes of green ammonia. Two current Fertiglobe ammonia units in Ain Sokhna will be used for the processing.
The collaboration, according to Scatec, is now finalizing the engineering and technological choices for the large-scale plant and plans to make the facility’s final investment decision in 2023.
