Netherlands-based company Plans Construction of New Integrated Battery and Electrolyser Plant

  • The expected annual output capacity of the factory is 1 GW.
  •  EUR 100 million is needed to construct the production site and new office and laboratory facilities.

Battolyser Systems, a Netherlands-based company, is working on constructing a factory that will manufacture an integrated battery and electrolyser, which will be used for green hydrogen production at the port of Rotterdam. The expected annual output capacity of the factory is 1 GW.

The facility is to be located on an industrial site in Rotterdam. It will produce the so-called Battolyser, a system that combines an electrolyser producing green hydrogen when wind and solar power are available at low prices, and a battery that will store the energy and feed it into the grid should there be a shortage and when prices are high.

The company is already having conversations with the country’s government and EU institutions, seeking the required funds for the project. EUR 100 million is needed to construct the production site and new office and laboratory facilities. The site will also be used as Battolyser’s head office and R&D centre. A final investment decision is expected to be made in late 2023, and the facility’s opening is planned for the second half of 2024.

The factory will bring the company closer to commercialising the new integrated system and enable its industrial-scale production.

“Companies in the port are already actively working on projects regarding production, imports, shipping, storage and use of green hydrogen. With this factory, we add green hydrogen equipment manufacturing to that portfolio,” said Port of Rotterdam’s chief executive Allard Castelein.
