- BMZ to support Kenya’s ambitious goal of 100% 100% renewable energy by 2030.
- Germany pledged around $119 million to the collaboration.
Germany’s Development Ministry (BMZ) has pledged to support Kenya’s ambitious goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030 and a socially just energy transition.
Both countries agreed on the path forward during government negotiations in Berlin. The cooperation’s focus is on expanding renewable energies, the power grid, hydrogen production, and creating new jobs. Germany pledged around $119 million to the collaboration.
Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMZ, Dr. Bärbel Kofler, noted that Kenya had made outstanding progress in terms of the energy transition. “At the climate conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, the course was set for our new climate and development partnership. Now comes the design. It not only helps Kenya with the necessary technical innovations but also improves acceptance of the energy transition among the population. This is important in order to make the necessary changes sustainable.”
The agreements between Germany and Kenya fill the German-Kenyan climate and development partnership agreed upon at the World Climate Conference in Sharm El-Sheik in the presence of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kenya’s President William Ruto with concrete commitments.
