Brazil now has solar as its second biggest source of power in the country’s energy mix with 23.9 GW of installed capacity. This comes behind hydro at 109.7 GW, according to the local solar association ABSOLAR.
Before the new milestone, wind power was in second place with 23.8 GW of installed capacity. The new numbers for solar are indicative of the self-generation installation and large-scale power plants.
ABSOLAR stated that since 2012, solar installations have brought in investments of BRL 120.8 billion (USD 22.5bn/EUR 21.3bn), created more than 705,000 local jobs and avoided the emission of 33.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The association’s board of directors president, Ronaldo Koloszuk, believes that the solar sector could reach or even top one million jobs by the end of 2023.
