- The European Union (EU) is injecting €12.5 million into the Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA).
- The funding will help accelerate access to clean cooking in Zambia.
There is a new contributor to the Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA). 12.5 million euros are being contributed by the European Union (EU). This money will help Zambians have access to clean cooking. Only 16% of the people in this East African nation have access to clean cooking. So, the task facing Zambian authorities who will support the MCFA is enormous.
This Swedish-founded organization supports private businesses that create and market clean cooking services by offering performance-based funding and catalytic grants as part of its African initiatives. The MCFA will help distribute 170,000 inexpensive, clean stoves in Zambia, benefiting at least 870,000 citizens of that country.
The Zambia Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Transformation Programme (ZEEST), which receives money from the EU, aims to unleash the private sector’s potential to help the country meet its energy efficiency and climate resilience targets. The initiative receives €25 million in funding from the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).
Sweden, which provided the initial €32.6 million for the facility, is a second source of funding for the MCFA, which helps with the implementation of ZEEST. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zimbabwe are among the five other sub-Saharan African nations supported by the mechanism, which also encourages access to clean cooking.
