The first 6.2 MW of the 434-MW Santo Agostinho wind farm complex in the state of Rio Grande do Norte went into commercial operation, according to an announcement made on Friday by the energy business Engie Brasil Energia SA.
The first wind turbine of the project can now begin operations, according to power sector regulator Aneel, who gave their approval last week.
70 wind turbines will be constructed over 14 wind farms in the municipalities of Lajes and Pedro Avelino after Santo Agostinho is finished.
An estimated $439.62m was invested in the project. The start of entire commercial operation is anticipated before the end of the year. The business is also working on the 846-MW Serra do Assurua project near Gentio do Ouro, Bahia state, in addition to Santo Agostinho. Overall, Engie Brasil currently has over 1.2 GW of installed wind capacity in the country.
