- Citizens’ complaints have swept social media, with many denouncing the absence of a prior notice ahead of the outage.
- The outage followed a significant accident that occurred at the electricity transmission centre.
On Tuesday evening, a lengthy power outage sparked anger and frustration among thousands of citizens across Rabat. The electricity was said to be out for over three hours without prior notice from the electric distribution company Redal. The electricity outage concerns several areas across Rabat and neighbouring regions, including Yacoub El Mansour, Temara, and Haroura.
The outage, which started at 5 p.m. in several areas in Rabat, frustrated Moroccans, particularly as it came a few hours ahead of breaking the fast. Like all Muslims worldwide, Moroccans are fasting for the holy of Ramadan. It was not until 7 p.m. when Redal issued a notice on Facebook to announce the electricity outage. The company wrote, “Following a major accident at the electricity transmission centre, Redal informs its customers that all Redal teams are working to restore the situation to its normal state.”
The company also apologized to its customers. Morocco World News attempted to contact Redal for a statement on the matter. However, the company’s phone lines appear to be inaccessible. Many have condemned the power outage and lack of communication regarding the matter.
