According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s 5.13 million metered electricity users increased by 2% in the fourth quarter of 2022. This is an increase of 7.37% from the same time last year. The 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) also increased their revenue from N202.62 billion in Q3 2022 to N232.32 billion in Q4 2022. In Q4 2022, the expected total number of customers increased to 5.93 million, a 3.34% year-over-year rise and a 0.34% increase over Q3 2022. However, the overall number of subscribers fell from 11.07 million to 10.94 million in the third quarter of 2022, a 1.19% year-over-year reduction.
Metered customers climbed by 1.33% to 5.02 million in the third quarter of 2022 from 4.96 million in the second quarter, an increase of 5.71% from 4.75 million in the third quarter of 2021. Estimated customers were 5.91 million in the third quarter of 2022, up 1.09% from the second quarter but down 6.38% from 6.32 million in the third quarter of 2021. The DisCos’ revenue during the period increased by 7.54% from N188.41 billion in Q2 2022 to N202.62 billion in Q3 2022 and by 5.56% from N191.95 billion in Q3 2021.
The overall number of customers climbed by 1.10% to 11.06 million in the fourth quarter of 2022 from 10.94 million in the third quarter and by 5.17% from 10.51 million in the fourth quarter of 2021. Revenue collected rose by 16.02% year-on-year from N200.23 billion in Q4 2021, and electricity supply rose by 11.68% to 5,611 (Gwh) from 5,024 (Gwh) in Q3 2022, while declining by 3.48% year-on-year compared to Q4 2021.
